![]() History has been kind to Hulk, with many retroactive assessments praising the film’s interiority and psychology - along with its distinctive visual style that consciously emulated comic book paneling. The other high-profile live-action adaptation had been Ang Lee’s Hulk, a 2003 film from the director of The Ice Storm and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. “You are the man,” Norton’s Banner assures the security guard, speaking for all fans of the series. The Incredible Hulk pays homage to this both by casting Ferrigno as the Hulk and by affording him a small cameo as a security guard. ![]() The most beloved was the classic television series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno that ran on CBS from 1978 until 1982. The Hulk had been subject to a couple of high-profile live-action adaptations before he was folded into the MCU. At the time of release, Hulk wasn’t just “ the strongest one there is,” but also the most famous. The MCU was largely built around what were (at the time) second stringers because their big names like Spider-Man and the X-Men had been licensed to other studios. It is also strange that the movie ended up such a disappointment. It is somewhat ironic that The Incredible Hulk remains the Green Goliath’s only solo entry in the MCU, reportedly in part due to that distribution deal with Universal. The film’s various sequel teases - including Tim Blake Nelson’s small role as future villain Samuel Sterns - were left unfulfilled. It was the only appearance of Edward Norton in the title role. It was the only film in the MCU distributed by Universal. While Iron Man would become the bedrock of the sprawling shared universe to follow, The Incredible Hulk was a dead end. The Incredible Hulk is the second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the release of Iron Man just six weeks earlier. If the MCU does follow the story of World War Hulk, audiences can not only expect the classic Angry Hulk, but perhaps also the most uninhibited version of the Jade Giant ever put to screen. The Incredible Hulk is a misfire, but an informative one. The She-Hulk: Attorney at Law spaceship that kicks off the events of the show may hint that Hulk's stay at Sakaar will continue to affect him, and the possibility of another trip to space is not off the table, even more so if his son, Skaar, is introduced in the MCU soon. Had he faced threats in the wake of the Blip, he would likely have lost control already. It's also true that Smart Hulk has benefited from several years of relative peace. In She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 1, the seemingly collected Smart Hulk keeps his calm while he defends himself from She-Hulk's attacks, but the little signs of repressed anger that manifest in massive shows of strength prove just how much power is still contained in Smart Hulk's body. Thankfully for Angry Hulk fans, the cracks have already started to show. However, Mark Ruffalo's MCU journey seems to be far from over, so there may be many opportunities for Bruce Banner to go through new drastic changes. It makes sense for Hulk to evolve into Smart Hulk from a narrative perspective since he earned his peace as much as Steve Rogers. Villains are permanently defeated, and when characters like Iron Man and Captain America die or retire, they're gone for good. While death is sometimes reversible, it is far more definitive. Live-action superhero movies and shows don't have the same sense of permanence as comic books.
